Day 1

Arrival DoualaReception and assistance at the airport by your guide of Zwinkels Tours Cameroon and transfer to hotel La Falaise in DoualaOvernight in the hotel

Day 2

The Dutch timber company “Reef Hout” specially invites the traveler to visit their saw mill in Basa Douala. Here the timber from their forest concession near Edea cut down according the international FSC (forest stewardship council) regulations for sustainable forestry, is processed into planks and other consumer articles and shipped to all corners of the world. Departure by private transport to Edea and visit to the forest concession of Reef Hout. After a pick-nick lunch a tour of the forest concession and explanation on sustainable forestry (FSC hall mark) and on how both forest and animals are being spared by applying this way of timber cutting. During your walk through the forest you might see monkeys and many different birds and if you are very lucky you might even encounter bush buffalo and bush elephant. Return to Edea and overnight inHotel Sanaga.

Day 3

After breakfast departure to Campo near the border of Equatorial Guinea. (approx 4 hrs) On the way you stop for a short visit to a palm oil and rubber plantation. The local cook prepares a tasty lunch for you in the community house at the beach in Campo. By involving the local community, sustainable tourism and sustainable development are stimulated and at the same time you help them to improve their standard of living. Check in and installation in the questhouse of a former timber company in Campo. Dinner and overnight.

Day 4

After a very early breakfast departure to Campo Ma’an National Park. (approx 1 hr). Arrival at the gate at approx. 07.00 hrs. The park can only be visited on foot accompanied by a certified local guide. For safety reasons (you are on foot) an armed escort will also accompany the visitors. As you will be walking in very thick forest spotting animals is more difficult than in the open savanna. However, your guide will do his utmost to spot them for you and show you the other signs of animals. With some luck you might see chimpanzees, monkeys, birds, antilopes, buffalo etc. He can also show you the various medicinal herbs and trees growing in the forest. Return at approx 12.00hrs and lunch in Campo. In the afternoon you can visit the local Pygmy community and see their special dances. Dinner and overnight in the guesthouse.

Day 5

Breakfast in the guesthouse and departure to Kribi. On the way you make a stop in Ebodje, a delightful small village situated at a beautiful white beach along the Atlantic Ocean. In December and January sea turtles come to these beaches at night to lay their eggs. You have time to enjoy the beach or have a swim and to have lunch at leisure. You can also pay a visit to the small turtle museum, set up with the help of SNV (Dutch Voluntary Organization) and adopt your own turtle or walk around in the village to see the daily life of the villagers. In the late afternoon you arrive in Kribi and check into the Framotel in Kribi for overnight.

Day 6

After breakfast you will make a 4 hour trip in a pirogue (dug out canoe) into the jungle along the river Lobe. While enjoying the calm and peace of the river, the jungle noises, the beautiful birds and small animals playing in the branches your boatman will paddle along. Upon return you visit to the Lobe water falls where the River Lobe empties directly into the sea. If you like you can have lunch at the beach with freshly caught shrimps and a cold beer. Return to the hotel and rest of the day at leisure to swim or to relax. Overnight in the hotel.

Day 7

Breakfast and departure to Yaoundé. A good tarred road cut through the forest and dotted with small villages takes you in approx. 5 hrs to the capital of Cameroon. Short sight seeing tour of Yaounde and check in hotel Jouvence. Evening dinner with life music in one of the many restaurants in Yaoundé. Overnight in the hotel.

Day 8

Breakfast and departure to Baham (5 hrs). At first the road cuts through tropical low land with pine apple plantations. Later it winds slowly up towards the mountains giving unexpected and beautiful panoramas. Arrival in Baham. Here you visit the palace of the Fon (king). If possible, you can stay the night in his palace, otherwise you check into the Palas hotel just across the palace. The Fon or a family member welcomes you and will show you around in the palace. Dinner and overnight.

Day 9

Breakfast followed by a visit to the Phantom Cave. The local community of Baham believes that their ancestors live in this cave. Therefore it still is a revered and holy place for them. Continuation of the trip to Foumban (3 hrs) with a pick nick lunch en route. On the way we stop for a visit to the famous palace of Bandjoun and the museum (world heritage site). Arrival in Foumban and check in Baba hotel. Dinner and overnight.

Day 10

Breakfast in the hotel. In Foumban visit to the palace of the Sultan of Foumban and the museum. The area of Foumban is islamitic and on Friday you can see the sultan walking to the mosque in a colorfull procession. Lunch in town. Foumban is the most important city of the Bamoun. The Bamoun tribe is famous for their artwork in bronze and wood. In the afternoon you visit Artisinan Street where you can see the craftsmen at work with wood carving, basket weaving, bronze casting etc. Here you can buy the most beautiful handmade souvenirs for a reasonable and fair price. Dinner and overnight in the Baba hotel.

Day 11

Breakfast and departure via Jakiri to Belo (7 hrs including stops) The untarred road winds through a mountainous area with beautiful vistas. On the way a visit to a Fulani family and their spotlessly clean huts. The Fulani’s are Islamic and are the friendly cattle breeders of Cameroon. They look after big herds of the typical African long horned cattle. The 2nd stop is for a visit to a traditional pottery. Here you can see the entire process from clay pit to potters wheel and ovens to the final product. Of course you can decide to buy a few items of the unique, handmade pottery. Pick nick lunch and continuation to the Mountain Lodge in Belo. Installation, dinner and overnight in comfortabe boukaroos. (electricity, hot and cold showers/flush toilets are available at the Zwinkels Mountain Lodge).

Day 12

Zwinkels Mountain Lodge Boukaroos

After breakfast departure for a trek (5-7 hrs) though the mountains to Mbingo (medium strenuous).Optional trek (strenuous to Lake Oku 7 hrs) Belo walk (easy 2 hrs) Optional program for non trekkers: horse riding with Fulani’s, visit to the villages around the Mountain Lodge guided by a local guide with a.o. reception in the traditional hourse of the “father of the Fon” . Dinner and cultural evening around the camp fire with traditional dances and local story telling. Overnight in boukaroos.

Day 13

Breakfast and departure by bus for a visit to the Ndwara Tea Estate (biggest in Cameroon). Tour of the plantation and visit to the tea factory. After lunch at the plantation, visit to the palace of Babungo, the museum and the village. On the return trip short stop at a Fulani yoghurt factory. Dinner and overnight in boukaroos at Zwinkels Mountain Lodge.

Day 14

After breakfast departure to Bamenda and check into a hotel in Bamenda. Visit to the bustling and colorful market in Bamenda (get your hair plaited!) Lunch in Bamenda. After lunch by bus to Bafut to the see the world famous Bafut Palace ( Unesco world heritage site) and to watch the traditional mask dances.Dinner in Bamenda and overnight in the Zwinkels Guest House.

Day 15

Breakfast. Today you go to Bangem (5 hrs). On the way a short stop at the Metchie and Ekom water falls. Bangem is a small village high up in the Bakossi Mountains. The climate is mild and pleasant and the people are English speaking and very hospitable. The conial, black bamboo huts are typical for this area. In olden times the people lived and slept in these huts, but today they are mainly used as kitchen. The landscape is breath taking with the high peaks of the Manengouba mountains as a back drop. Reception by the villagers followed by a short walk around the village. Dinner and overnight in a small but charming and clean hotel.

Day 16

Breakfast. Walk (medium strenuous) to the famous “Twin Lakes” with a local guide. You can also opt for an easy walk and visit some villages in the area. De two crater lakes (the “male” and “female” lake) are still revered and visited by the local people to profess their traditonal religion, to pray and to make their sacrifices to the local gods. Pick nick lunch at the shore of one of the lakes and return to the village. Dinner and overnight in the hotel.

Day 17

Breakfast and departure to Kumba (4 hrs) Arrival in Kumba, a bustling town in the English speaking part of Cameroon. Due to the proximity of Nigeria, Kumba is a rather important trading and commercial town in Cameroon. Check- in hotel. Dinner in town and overnight in the Elonga Garden hotel.

Day 18

Breakfast in the hotel. Departure to Barombi Lake, a crater lake in the middle of lush tropical rain forest. Local fishermen paddle you in their piroque to the other side of the lake. The local chief gladly invites you for a soda or a beer and will show you around in his village. You can return again by piroque or you can make a beautiful walk back through the rich and shadowy jungle along the shores of the lake. Pick nick lunch at the lake. Back in Kumba you might fancy to visit the colorful market where also many people from Nigeria offer their goods for sale. Bridget and Clement Mufut, a fantastic and very hospitable Cameroonian couple invite you to come and have dinner with them in their house. Bridget is a very good cook and prepares tasty Cameroonian specialties as well as European dishes. Overnight in Elonga Garden hotel.

Day 19

Breakfast and departure to Limbe, at the foot of Mount Cameroon (4 hrs). Check- in at the New Seme Beach hotel. Day at leisure to relax on the black sand volcanic beach or to swim in the warm waters of the ocean. Dinner and overnight in the hotel.

Day 20

Breakfast in the hotel. In the morning a visit to the fish market and the fish smokeries near the fishing harbour of Limbe is planned. Lunch in restaurant Hot Spot with a beautiful view on the harbour and the many colorful fishing boats at the sea shore. After lunch stroll through the old English botanical gardens and the Wild Life Center (WWF). Here orphaned chimpanzees, mandrills and low land gorilla’s are received, taken care of and nursed back to health. On the way back to the hotel a short stop at the lava stream, left on the road by the last eruption of Mount Cameroon. Dinner and overnight in Hotel Seme Beach.

Day 21

Breakfast in the hotel. Morning at leisure. After lunch departure to Douala around 14.00 hrs. In Douala a visit to the biggest artisinal market of Cameroon to do some last souvenir shopping. Transfer to the airport and check in for your flight back to your home destionation.
